Benefits to our Communities
Wetlands provide numerous benefits for our local communities and our environment as a whole.
Biodiversity
Wetlands are home to an abundance of birds, fish, amphibians, invertebrates and mammals, many of which rely on this region for survival.
Flood and Sea Level Rise protection
Wetlands act as a buffer zone for seasonal flooding as well as sea level rise. This will become more and more important for nearby communities and businesses over time.
Natural filtration
Wetlands and the plants that live there filter out pollutants and allow water to slowly sink back into the ground, recharging aquifers and purifying the water that flows through the region.
Carbon sink
The soil and plants found in wetlands are great at capturing and holding onto carbon, making them vital in our efforts against climate change.
Education
Wetlands provide an excellent opportunity for kids and adults alike to learn more about the natural world, up-close and in-person.
Recreation
Wetlands offer a place to birdwatch, hike, photograph, and generally enjoy the beauty of our own region.
